In an effort to show the hardships that befell the young spouse, the authors deliberately doubled his suffering. At first, he overworked himself with excessively hard work and ended up in the hospital, paying off exorbitant debts that his parents got into by collecting kalym. Then he suddenly discovered that he did not love his wife at all. Probably, each of these motives would be more than enough to show the unhappiness of a young man, and at the same time the immorality of a marriage bought for money. As lawyers in ancient Rome used to say, whoever proves too much proves nothing. When in the film all the circumstances literally revolt against the people who paid the kalym, it begins to seem that the authors were concerned not so much with the intention to tell us a typical life story, as with the desire to prove once again what the remnants of the past bring. Spending obviously excessive forces on proving known propositions, the authors actually limit themselves to the logic of denial, instead of scrupulously and closely analyzing the causes of what happened and its consequences. The viewer, as it most often happens, is shown that the elderly parents of the hero insisted on kalym: for some reason, speaking of survivals, we like to blame everything on the unconscious old people. And the consent of the young hero is explained only by his filial obedience. It's a strange thing: a sensible guy, a good and honest worker who graduated from school and technical school, who probably belonged to the Komsomol, meekly obeys the ridiculous decisions of his parents. They get into unthinkable debts, sell things necessary in the house, including a TV, return, despite their advanced age, to work, send their son for a long ruble, etc., etc
. Events replace one another, forcing the audience to feel a strange phantasmagoria of what is happening. However, the imperative form of the construction of the film does not allow the director to finish it with a question asked by the hero to himself — instead of a lyrical ellipsis, bravura exclamation marks turned out. Husband and wife confess their indifference to each other (!), decide to devote themselves to the fight against an ugly relic of antiquity (!!), help a young couple in love to find happiness without the help of money (!!!). As a result of this whole story, even backward parents — just like in the films and plays of the 40s about innovators and conservatives - admit their mistakes and urge others not to follow their bad example.
The position of the director, expressing his unequivocal attitude to the problem posed in the film, causes the audience to fully agree. His public temperament gives him an outstanding journalistic talent. The advanced, healthy in our life wins a well-deserved victory. So why is the tape as a whole, as a work of art, not marked by complete, unconditional success? Why do fans of Narliev's talent have many reasons for reproaches?
There are many reasons, including private ones. But I will name those of them that, in my opinion, are important for the entire creative work of the director. First of all, he betrayed himself, abandoned his strongest artistic trait, the lyrical way of unfolding and analyzing the material. Secondly, having entered the territory dominated by acute dramatic collisions, Narliev hoped that, as before, he would be able to do without the help of an experienced screenwriter.
